DSC_3172This blog really began in February 2014. That was when I began my annual 40 days and 40 nights of giving up sweets and fried foods for Lent. I’d done this before, and it was never too challenging, but that year I was dealing with a four-hour daily commute and a stressful job, and I was finding my sacrifice harder than usual.

Instead of turning to sugar, I decided to turn to a podcast, and searched the interwebs until I stumbled upon the Balanced Bites podcast, hosted by Diane Sanfilippo and Liz Wolfe.

The discovery of that podcast literally changed my life. Dramatic, I know- but I mean it. I  began devouring past episodes of the hour-long podcast (the way I would have been devouring chocolate!), learning more and more about the science behind the Paleo lifestyle.

I had never considered the diet before. I was eating sandwiches almost daily, and pasta for dinner a few times a week. I literally ate pasta for breakfast a few times a month (this is a no judgement zone, right?!). But something about the diet recommendations discussed by the Balanced Bites ladies just clicked.

What I was learning went against everything I had always done to lose weight (read: light bread w/ egg whites and/or low-fat deli meats, fat-free cheese and 100-calorie packs of chips and cookies), and it was a little scary.

You mean, I can eat fat? I can eat beef, and bacon, and BUTTER?! If this is true, I wondered, what have I been doing with my life?! All this time I could have enjoyed my food. I could have enjoyed cooking. How had I got it so wrong?

Of course, my “diet” choices were nothing unusual. I hadn’t thought of eating fat-free, chemical-ridden, calorie-restricted meals on my own. No, nearly everyone I knew was doing the same thing. It’s the American way! And that’s why I decided to start this blog.

Because in the year since I started following a (mostly) Paleo lifestyle (a girl’s got to eat some well-made cheese after all!), I have lost 30 pounds, gained a level of fitness I have always hoped for, improved my skin and energy levels and found an absolute love of cooking. All while eating more delicious, healthful, whole foods than I ever thought possible. And all without counting a single calorie.
